Trans Trailblazers: Local Transmen Launch Safe Space in Cebu
In the energetic heart of Cebu, a revolutionary sanctuary is taking shape. Last Friday, May 17, 2025, marked the grand opening of “TransHaven”, a groundbreaking community center created by and for transgender men in the region. Your favorite cultural connoisseur had the privilege of attending this fabulous inauguration, and darlings, it was nothing short of transformative!
A Dream Realized Through Solidarity
TransHaven emerges from the passionate vision of Ryan Mendoza and his dedicated team of five fellow transmen who recognized the critical need for a dedicated space where transgender individuals could find support, resources, and authentic community. (And between us, the interior design is absolutely divine, think modern Filipino aesthetics with splashes of pride colors integrated in the most tasteful ways!)
“We’ve dreamed of this space for years,” shares Mendoza, the charismatic 32-year-old founder whose journey as a transgender advocate began after his own transition in 2019. “Every transman in Cebu knows the isolation that can come with transition. TransHaven isn’t just a building, it’s a promise that none of us have to walk this path alone anymore.”
More Than Just a Space, A Movement
TransHaven offers an impressive array of services tailored specifically to the transgender community’s needs. The center houses a resource library, counseling rooms, a small medical consultation area, and my personal favorite, a active community hall where weekly events from support groups to art workshops will unfold.
What sets this initiative apart is its commitment to cultural expression. A dedicated gallery showcases transgender artists’ work, with the inaugural exhibition featuring breathtaking photography documenting the transition journeys of ten local transmen. The raw emotion and authentic beauty captured in these images left this seasoned art critic genuinely moved, and trust me, that doesn’t happen often!
Community Response: Overwhelming Support
The launch event drew over 200 attendees from across the LGBT+ spectrum and allies, including several notable figures from Cebu’s artistic community. The atmosphere buzzed with possibility as attendees explored the space, many visibly emotional at witnessing this historic milestone for transgender visibility in the Philippines.
Perhaps most significant was the presence of several transgender youth accompanied by their families, a powerful sign to the changing environment of acceptance. “Seeing parents supporting their transgender children gives me hope for the future generation,” noted co-founder Marco Dalisay. “We created the space we wished existed when we were younger.”
