Quezon City Pride Festival Unites LGBTQ+ and Allies

Rainbow flags, bold voices, and booming music transformed the University of the Philippines-Diliman last June 28 as the Quezon City Pride Festival, dubbed “Lovelaban sa Diliman,” drew an estimated 250,000 attendees, a record-breaking crowd whose sparkling energy could outshine even Manila’s unpredictable weather. Organized by the joint forces of the Quezon City government, UP Diliman, and the Pride PH Coalition, the festival proved how powerful unity can be in celebrating love, fighting for equal rights, and refusing to back down in the face of adversity. Queer Filipinos and allies stood shoulder to shoulder, unbothered by the heat or sudden rain, all for one purpose: to show that pride never goes out of style (Philstar).

Strength in numbers: Turning up the volume on equality

UP Diliman’s iconic Sunken Garden, usually a hangout for students and joggers, became a sea of color and kilig. The festival featured a active Pride Expo, a Pride March that stretched across campus and beyond, and a dazzling Pride Night where music, art, and community truly took center stage. Scattered across Quezon City were “Pride Villages”, safe spaces for queer folks, families, and friends to relax, express themselves, and experience genuine acceptance without fear (Quezon City Government).

Making history, and making it count

Mayor Joy Belmonte didn’t mince words: “QC has stood as a proud ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, not merely in words but through concrete policies and programs that truly champion gender equality.” This partnership, now on its fourth year, isn’t just lip service. It represents a real commitment, promoting inclusive laws and championing the passage of the SOGIE Equality Bill, the nation’s longest-running equality proposal.

UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II echoed the sentiment. “UP has always been a safe space for queer students and allies,” he emphasized, welcoming everyone to the campus and vowing continued advocacy for human rights and inclusivity (PIA).

Beyond the rainbow: Safe spaces, real talk

Festival organizers worked overtime to ensure everyone’s safety, deploying security, traffic teams, and on-site emergency response. This year amped up the focus on mental health supports and visible allies on the ground, because pride means safety as well as visibility. The call to action was loud: keep the fight going until every Filipino, regardless of identity or orientation, can live with pride and dignity.
