Remembering Trans Icon Miss Major Griffin-Gracy

In the early hours of October 13, 2025, the world bid farewell to a trailblazer in trans advocacy: Miss Major Griffin-Gracy. This iconic Black trans figure, known for her fearless dedication to her community, passed away at the age of 78, surrounded by loved ones in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her indomitable spirit, however, endures forever.

A Life Shaped by Defiance

Born in Chicago in 1946, Miss Major’s life was anything but ordinary. Her story is one of grit and revolution. A firsthand witness to the Stonewall Riots in 1969, she stood her ground, helping her trans siblings amidst the chaos of police raids. That key night fueled a passion she carried forward for over half a century. When she moved to Little Rock with her family in 2015, she didn’t slow down. Instead, she established the Griffin-Gracy Educational and Historical Center, known as the House of GG, a haven for trans women of color in the South. “Her enduring legacy stands as a sign to her resilience,” her House of GG family shared on Facebook, their hearts heavy yet full of pride.

A Champion During Turmoil

Miss Major was all about action. During the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in San Francisco, she took charge at City of Refuge and the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center, setting up the area’s first needle-exchange program to curb disease transmission. As the executive director of the Transgender, Gender-Variant & Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), she became a formidable advocate for incarcerated trans individuals, often neglected by society. Revered as the community’s “surrogate mother,” she infused each endeavor with love and determination.

A Legacy That Shines On

As we remember her amidst ongoing violence, with 58 trans lives lost since November 2024, 27 due to violence, Miss Major’s influence remains energetic. The House of GG continues her mission, and her stories resonate within every sanctuary. She taught us that resilience is bold and unyielding. Whether it’s laughing at her candid humor in old videos or reflecting on past triumphs and trials, her legacy lives within us. Miss Major hasn’t truly left us; she lives on through those she inspired. Rest in power, dear ate; we’re carrying your torch.
