Mga mahal naming kaibigan, as we reflect on our Southeast Asian community, there’s plenty to celebrate, yet also some areas that call for our attention and care. The Philippines has garnered a wonderful reputation as one of the most accepting nations for our Queer community in Asia. However, understanding the situations of our ASEAN neighbors helps us appreciate our achievements and realize the work that remains.

Here’s some uplifting news: recent findings place the Philippines among the top 10 most gay-friendly countries worldwide. Our Pride events, attracting over 110,000 participants in Quezon City alone, are the largest LGBT gatherings in Southeast Asia. Isn’t that something to genuinely feel proud about?

Yet, there are situations that challenge our hearts. Despite the legality of same-sex activities in the Philippines and progress on LGBTQ+ acceptance, our regional neighbors face different challenges. In countries like Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Singapore, homosexuality is still criminalized. Imagine that, being punished simply for loving someone.

Our Own Unfinished Journey

We must face some truths. For over 20 years, a national anti-discrimination bill focusing on sexual orientation and gender identity has stalled in Congress. Although some cities have enacted local protections, the absence of a national law leaves many Filipinos vulnerable to discrimination without legal recourse.

Recent 2025 studies highlight that lesbian, bisexual, and queer women in the Philippines encounter online gender-based violence and hate speech, with prevailing anti-LGBTIQ attitudes hindering access to official support. Also, our older Queer community faces issues with housing, healthcare, and social security that require our empathy and action.

Heart to Heart

So what does this imply for us, ate and kuya? It shows that we can embrace two truths: gratitude for the freedoms we’ve cultivated and a strong resolve to complete what we’ve started. Our role in the region is significant. Our voices are significant. Each time we stand up for ourselves and each other, in our communities, discussions, and demands for justice, we’re not only advocating for us. We’re setting an example for our neighbors who endure much tougher circumstances.
