Babaylanes Inc leads coalition demanding urgent action on workplace equality in the Philippines

# Babaylanes, Inc. Leads Coalition Demanding Urgent Action on Workplace Equality in the Philippines

In a powerful display of solidarity, Babaylanes, Inc. has spearheaded a coalition of LGBTQI organizations calling on 2025 election candidates to champion workplace equality and anti-discrimination policies across the Philippines. The coalition, which gathered in Quezon City on May 3, launched the complete “LGBTQI Community Agenda” that outlines critical reforms needed in workplaces, educational institutions, healthcare systems, and governance structures.

## The Economic Cost of Discrimination

At the heart of this advocacy push are shocking economic findings. Recent research reveals that discrimination against LGBTQI workers costs the Philippine economy approximately ₱73 billion annually. This staggering figure shows not just a human rights concern, but a significant economic issue that affects the nation’s prosperity.

“Our most talented workers are leaving the country for more opportunities, but also for spaces where they can feel safe, accepted, and empowered to be their truest selves,” explained Jap Ignacio, Executive Director of Babaylanes, Inc.

The Asian Development Bank has reinforced this position, acknowledging that genuine inclusion promotes economic development by allowing LGBTQI members of the workforce to apply their creative perspectives without barriers.

## Key Policy Demands

The coalition’s agenda focuses on several workplace-specific reforms, including:

– Enforcing equal opportunity and anti-discrimination policies in all workplaces
– Strengthening Anti-Discrimination Ordinances nationwide
– Enhancing Gender and Development initiatives
– Securing legal recognition and protection for LGBTQI relationships

Beyond employment concerns, the agenda also addresses the need for SOGIESC awareness in education, increased funding for inclusive healthcare (particularly HIV prevention and treatment), and promoting media sensitivity in reporting LGBTQI issues.

## Building Momentum for Change

The coalition’s efforts come at a crucial time, as preparations for the 2025 elections gain momentum. By launching their campaign now, they aim to influence political platforms and secure commitments from candidates before voting begins.

“Policymakers need to understand that passing the SOGIE Equality Bill is a crucial step towards making our economy more inclusive and, so, stronger,” Ignacio emphasized.

The coalition has also released a five-minute video campaign promoting their agenda across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to maximize public awareness.

To future-proof the Philippine economy, Ignacio concludes, “We must invest in our people, all our people. Inclusion is not a handout. It’s a smart economic strategy”.

As election campaigns ramp up, this coalition’s clear message resonates: workplace equality isn’t just about social justice, it’s an economic imperative for a thriving Philippines.
