In a Catholic area often marked by rigid traditions, Tagle’s voice stands out as a beacon of progress and understanding.
“The harsh words that were used in the past to refer to gays and divorced and separated people, the unwed mothers, et cetera, in the past they were quite severe,” Tagle boldly declared at a Catholic youth conference back in 2015. He didn’t stop there, pointing out how these labels led to isolation and exclusion from wider society.

In 2017, Cardinal Tagle spearheaded the groundbreaking Lazarus Project on social media, specifically calling for LGBTQ+ acceptance in churches across the Philippines.
