What does it mean to be non-binary?
Non-binary is a beautiful umbrella term for people whose gender doesn’t fit neatly into the categories of “man” or “woman.” It’s lively, diverse, and ever-evolving! Think gender-fluid, genderqueer, agender, and so much more. As GLAAD explains, non-binary people “experience their gender identity and/or gender expression as falling outside the binary gender categories of ‘man’ and ‘woman.’” Each person finds their own path, some mixing and matching, others soaring totally outside the binary.Read more about non-binary identities here
How did International Non-Binary People’s Day start?
This special day was launched in 2012 by Katje van Loon, picking July 14 because it lands right in the middle of International Women’s Day and International Men’s Day. It’s a nod to the fact that gender isn’t always “either/or”, sometimes it’s “and,” “neither,” or something completely different!
