**Operation Supak: A Threat to LGBTQIA+ Rights in Region XII**

Imagine the unsettling scenario where barangay officials appear at your doorstep, urging you to prove that your love doesn’t defy religious beliefs. This disturbing reality unfolded for seven LGBTQIA+ couples in Barangay Layog, Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur, part of Region XII’s SOCCSKSARGEN. Known as “Operation Supak,” this initiative has become infamous for its harsh stance against same-sex relationships. Reports have surfaced of couples being forcibly separated and taken to the barangay hall for so-called “settlements,” all under the guise of adhering to religious laws over national rights.

### An Attack on Love and Dignity

Barangay Chairman Datu Faisal Mamasabulod Alhaj, in a straightforward interview with Brigada News, asserted that same-sex cohabitation contradicts Islamic teachings. Yet, using faith as a tool to suppress the rights of consenting adults is unacceptable! The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) quickly identified this as a severe violation of privacy, equality, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Importantly, no Philippine law prohibits the love between women or between men.

While religious freedom is respected, it should not infringe upon constitutional protections for who we love.
