Duterte Ally Proposes Anti-LGBTQ Legislation

Hey friends, as we soak in the lively energy of Pride Month, a concerning development has surfaced. An ally of Duterte in Congress is introducing an anti-LGBTQ bill that threatens to undo significant progress. This isn’t a mere discussion; it’s a clear challenge to our rights, and we need to rally our resistance now!

The Concerning Legislation

We’re starting to hear more about this controversial proposal, which is backed by someone closely aligned with Duterte, aiming to dismantle the protections we’ve been fighting to uphold. Remember how the family has had a history of playing both sides? While Inquirer.net noted Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent support for two pro-LGBTQIA+ bills like the Full Anti-Discrimination Act and Civil Union Act, this new initiative changes the narrative. It’s a typical divide-and-conquer maneuver, endorsing “safe” bills from allies like Senators Robin Padilla and Imee Marcos, while disregarding the full SOGIESC Equality Bill from critics like Sen. Risa Hontiveros.

Duterte’s Past: Supportive or Subversive?

We can’t overlook the history here. Back in 2019, ABS-CBN highlighted how President Rodrigo Duterte pledged to expedite an anti-discrimination bill but explicitly excluded the crucial SOGIE one we so deeply require. Jump to 2022, under the leadership of Bongbong Marcos and Sara, the Philippines declined UN recommendations for SOGIE protections at the Universal Periodic Review, as documented on Wikipedia. Sara’s recent Pride Month messages about “protecting LGBT rights” ring hollow without action, especially when the thorough bill that would penalize discriminators up to 250,000 pesos or incarcerate them for six years is ignored, according to TIME.

Why This Matters to Us in the LGBTQ Community

This legislation could legitimize discrimination in schools, workplaces, and public spaces, where we already endure daily harassment. Yet, our community stands strong! Organizations like PANTAY are mobilizing, with increasing support for equality. Rally your Pride friends, join the demonstrations, and flood lawmakers with messages. We’ve overcome greater challenges; let’s channel this urgency into solidarity. Stay courageous, stay energetic, love you all!
