Empowering Economies QueerCon 2025 Revolutionizes LGBT Business

QueerCon 2025 Pushes LGBT+ Economic Empowerment Forward

At the height of Pride Month, the energy at Quezon City’s busy central mall was unmistakable, not just rainbow flags waving, but also business cards flying. This weekend’s QueerCon 2025 proved to be more than just a celebration: it was a declaration that queer empowerment means economic empowerment, especially for small business owners and entrepreneurs striving for recognition and resilience.

Economic inclusion takes center stage

The two-day expo, co-hosted by the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce (PLCC) and the Quezon City government, brought together more than 40 queer-owned brands and countless allies. Panels ranged from “Drag Economics” to tips on launching queer-friendly enterprises in a challenging market, all championing the event’s theme: Purpose Beyond Pride.

“Every purchase at QueerCon is a vote for equity and visibility,” explained PLCC chair Ronn Astillas. “When you support an LGBT-owned business, you’re not just helping us survive, you’re fueling a chain of stability and employment within our community” (GMA News). Astillas emphasized how initiatives like QueerCon build livelihoods, establish role models, and set the stage for queer businesses to thrive amid persistent discrimination.

Charting the pink economy’s potential

A sobering economic analysis estimates that ongoing bias against LGBTQIA+ Filipinos costs the country up to 147.6 billion pesos annually, roughly 0.3 to 0.7 percent of GDP. That’s wasted talent, lost business, and missed opportunities. QueerCon’s marketplace proved that flipping the script is not only just, but profitable, as mainstream companies begin to recognize the pink peso and its power to grow customer bases.

In a show of momentum, the PLCC unveiled its new “Pride Seal of Excellence,” a certification aimed at making LGBTQIA+ inclusion a business best practice. Allies are getting on board, too: the Philippine Business Coalition for Women’s Empowerment now includes LGBT+ criteria in its equality assessments, signaling a shift toward real, measurable change.

Ripple effects beyond Pride

Astillas and other organizers hope QueerCon’s success will be the start of a nationwide movement. “When we lift LGBT+ businesses, we’re uplifting entire communities,” Astillas noted, calling for more regional expos and policy support. The event’s timing, just days before this year’s historic Pride March, adds urgency to those calls for economic and legal inclusion.

For Filipino LGBT+ entrepreneurs and their allies, QueerCon 2025 wasn’t just a weekend of color and connection; it was a strategic leap toward a future where economic dignity is central to queer liberation.
