Rainbow Youth Academy Empowers Next Gen of LGBTQ+ Leaders
Vibrancy, courage, and heart, that’s what you feel the second you step into a Rainbow Youth Academy program! This past weekend, the Rainbow Youth Academy in Manila brought together a powerhouse crew of LGBTQ+ youth, mentors, and advocates, all united by a single goal: to shape the next wave of Filipino queer leaders ready to make their mark on the world.
Building confidence, one session at a time
Organized by the Philippine Financial & Inter-Industry Pride (PFIP), the Academy isn’t just a training ground, it’s a family. Over a packed Saturday, participants dove into workshops covering leadership, SOGIE education, and community advocacy. PFIP Chairperson Angelo Camaya kicked things off with a rallying cry, urging attendees, “Your presence signifies more than support, it’s the beginning of bold action for our entire community.” The energy in the room? Electric. Everyone from wide-eyed first-timers to passionate organizers mingled, swapping stories and dreams for a better, more inclusive future. Sessions focused on the nuts and bolts of grassroots organizing and also gave space for honest conversations about the challenges Filipino LGBTQ+ youth face, and, more importantly, how to rise above them together.
Representation matters: Making space for every story
Beyond hard skills, the Academy knows that real leadership starts with being seen and celebrated for who you are. Their approach is deeply personal, mentors and alumni facilitate small group circles where everyone gets a turn in the spotlight. One mentor shared, “I never saw people like me leading or speaking out when I was a teen. Now, we’re making sure nobody here feels invisible.” Attendees echoed this, with many expressing it was their first time feeling truly accepted in a professional setting.
Impact that goes beyond the workshops
The Academy’s effect ripples out far past the walls of its meeting rooms. By connecting youth to established leaders and creating opportunities for hands-on involvement, think community projects, Pride marches, and even internship placements, PFIP ensures empowerment doesn’t stop when the day’s over. This is about rewriting narratives: youth are encouraged to run for office, lead organizations, and stand up as advocates for their peers, directly echoing the rallying message seen on social media, Change starts with courage.
