Empowering Trans Women: What Keylyn Trajano’s Coronation Means for Filipino LGBT+ Youth
On April 30, 2025, the Filipino LGBT+ community made history, again. Keylyn Trajano, a proud trans Filipina, was officially crowned Universal Woman Arabia 2025, marking a triumphant milestone not just for her, but for countless Filipino LGBT+ youth searching for hope, possibility, and pride.
A New Era of Representation
Keylyn’s victory isn’t just about a glittering crown or a sash. As the first trans woman to represent any country in the Universal Woman pageant, she shatters glass ceilings and breaks through barriers that once seemed impossible to overcome. The pageant itself stands apart: welcoming women aged 21 to 45 of all backgrounds, with no limitations on height, weight, or marital status, a true celebration of diversity, brilliance, and the positive impact women can create.
But what makes Keylyn’s coronation deeply personal for so many? Just last year, she was poised to become the first trans woman to compete in Miss Universe Philippines-Pampanga, but had to withdraw, a reminder of the hurdles trans Filipinas still face in their own country. Through her Universal Woman platform, Keylyn has found what she calls her “true universal home”, a space where she’s celebrated not just for inclusivity’s sake, but for her story, advocacy, and unapologetic authenticity.
Strength in Storytelling
In an emotional speech during her crowning, Keylyn shared:
> “I’m here because I have a message. I’m here because I have a story. … I’m willing to change the world in my own simple way. … All the hardships, all the abuse, all the discrimination, all the rejections, it led me to where I become, which is universal because I have a story to tell. … Our stories, our narratives are symbols of past, present, and future … my story is uniquely mine and that will transcend generations.”
Her words echo what so many Filipino LGBT+ youth feel, but rarely see reflected in mainstream narratives: resilience, pride, and hope.
