Survey Reveals Rising Filipino Support for Gays and Lesbians

In living rooms from Manila to Mindanao, the mood is shifting, slowly, surely, but undeniably. A wave of new data, released on July 12, 2025, paints a heartening picture: more Filipinos are expressing support for their gay and lesbian kababayan than ever before. The voices of LGBTQ+ youth, once hushed and hesitant, are now echoing louder in communities that are learning, at last, to listen.

Numbers that speak, stories that matter

According to the 2024 Philippines National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, almost half of the surveyed LGBTQ+ youth feel that their communities are accepting, an improvement from past years, when tolerance, not acceptance, was the best many dared to hope for. The survey, covering voices from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, reveals that 47% felt genuine acceptance, while an additional 36% sensed at least tolerance.

This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a lifeline. “I used to be scared to come out, even to my own barkada,” shares Paolo, a 20-year-old from Quezon City. “But now, I see classmates and even titas standing up for us on social media. It gives me hope that things are changing.”

Why acceptance matters

The difference between acceptance and mere tolerance is more than just semantic. For LGBTQ+ youth, living in accepting communities directly links to better mental health and a lower risk of self-harm. The survey found that those surrounded by acceptance reported lower rates of suicide attempts and self-harm, a reminder that embracing diversity is literally saving lives. Findings show that LGBTQ+ young people living in accepting communities had better mental health outcomes than those in unaccepting areas, with significantly less frequent suicidal thoughts and actions (full report here).

Although the journey is far from over, discrimination, bullying, and stereotypes remain stubborn foes, the growth in support signals a hopeful shift. As more Filipinos of all genders, ages, and regions lend their voices to the rainbow chorus, LGBTQ+ Filipinos can begin to dream bigger: of schools free from ridicule, workplaces built on respect, and families that celebrate, not just tolerate, every kind of love.

As one trans teen in Davao put it, “Maybe one day, every barangay will raise the Pride flag. Until then, we’ll keep marching, loving, and hoping. Because now, we know we’re not alone.”
