Honey, grab your most fabulous attire because the 54th Annual Northwest Folklife Festival is serving culture, diversity, and Filipino queer excellence this Memorial Day weekend! As your resident cultural connoisseur, I simply couldn’t resist diving into this year’s festivities, which are absolutely dripping with meaningful representation from our beloved Filipino LGBTQ+ community.

The festival, running May 23-26 at Seattle Center under this year’s theme “IKIGAI” (a Japanese concept about finding purpose), has truly outdone itself by featuring prominent Filipino queer artists who are making waves in the Pacific Northwest scene.

The Queen of Seattle: Aleksa Manila Takes Center Stage

Darlings, let me tell you about Seattle’s sweetheart of social activism, the incomparable Aleksa Manila! This genderqueer FilipinX immigrant is not just serving looks, she’s serving purpose and passion. On Saturday, Aleksa hosted her signature “Drag Queen Storytime,” creating a magical safe space where cultural pride and queer joy intersect beautifully.

*fans self dramatically* And can we talk about her resume? From founding Pride ASIA to being honored with Seattle Mayor’s Award and the Filipino Community of Seattle Lifetime Achievement Award, Mama Aleksa has been breaking barriers while looking absolutely stunning doing it.

Day Soul Exquisite: Bringing Queer Filipino Rhythms

The music scene at Folklife was positively electric with Day Soul Exquisite performing at the Vera Project Queer Showcase on Saturday evening. Their Saturday 8:15 PM set had the crowd absolutely gagging with their unique sound that weaves Filipino cultural elements with contemporary queer expressionism.
