**Heartfelt Connection:** Navigating the healthcare system as a queer Filipino can be daunting. This past June, the LGBTQIA+ community in the Philippines received a beacon of hope: **”Justice with Pride: LGBTQIA+ Community Legal Guidebook in the Philippines.”** Unveiled during a Pride event at the British Embassy in Makati, this guidebook tackles one of our community’s biggest challenges, facing health crises without the safeguard of legal rights.

The guidebook is the result of a collaboration between the **Mujer LGBT+ Organization**, **TrustLaw**, the **Thomson Reuters Foundation**, and **SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan**. It’s been in the making for nearly two years, drawing from extensive research and the real-life experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals throughout the Philippines. This isn’t just a theoretical resource; it’s a crucial tool for survival.

Why is this so crucial? In the absence of legal acknowledgment of same-sex partnerships, hospitals often refuse to grant our chosen families the access they need during critical times. This means our partners are unable to make essential health decisions, and our voices can be silenced. The guidebook bridges this painful divide by offering practical, step-by-step advice on understanding your healthcare rights, dealing with authorities, and finding support.

This guide is essential because of the stark inequalities our community faces. Studies show that **58% of older LGBTI individuals in the Philippines haven’t seen a doctor in the past six months** due to fears of discrimination and a lack of information on healthcare options, a situation that affects people of all ages.

There is a glimmer of hope, too. **Quezon City recently enacted a gender-inclusive health ordinance** which ensures affirming and accessible healthcare while banning conversion therapy. It’s a shining example of progress and what is achievable.
