## Heart to Heart: Navigating Political Conversations with Non-Affirming Family Members

For many in our Filipino LGBT+ community, election season isn’t just about casting our votes, it can mean bracing ourselves for tense political talks, especially with family members who don’t affirm our identities or rights. Whether these conversations flare up over breakfast or simmer quietly in group chats, they can leave us feeling unseen, exhausted, or alone. But you’re not alone, let’s hold heart space together as we explore gentle ways to navigate these moments while protecting your peace.
Why Political Conversations Matter for Queer Filipinos
This year, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Philippine Anti-discrimination Alliance of Youth Leaders (PANTAY) have launched Project Rainbow AGENDA, aiming to center queer voices in the democratic process for the 2025 polls. Their work reminds us: our lived experiences, hopes, and struggles deserve to shape the national conversation. Yet, too often, our truths are met with resistance at home first.
Holding Your Ground with Compassion
Approaching non-affirming family with openness can feel impossible, especially when political topics like the SOGIE Equality Bill spark heated debate. Here are gentle, heart-centered strategies to help:
– Listen first. Sometimes, people need to feel heard before they’re ready to listen themselves.
– Share your story. Personal experiences can humanize abstract issues, making them real for loved ones.
– Set gentle boundaries. If the conversation turns hurtful, it’s okay to pause or step away: “I care about us too much to fight right now.”
– Seek common ground. Focus on universal Filipino values, like family, respect, and love, as a bridge.
– Remember, changing minds can take time. Sometimes, simply planting a seed is enough.
Heart to Heart
If you’re feeling drained or overwhelmed, that’s valid. Your mental health and safety come first. Surround yourself with chosen family or supportive friends, especially after tough conversations. Community groups, like those involved in Project Rainbow AGENDA, are holding space for us to share, heal, and act.
Reflection questions to ponder:
– What part of your story do you feel safe sharing today?
– How can you protect your energy during tough talks?
– Who in your life supports and truly sees you?
Remember, engaging in these conversations is a form of courage. Every heart opened is a step toward a more inclusive future for all Filipinos.
You are, and will always be, worthy of love and respect, at home, at the polls, and in every corner of our community.
