LGBTQ+ Activists Launch New Push for SOGIE Bill in Manila

Hot off the heels of Pride Month, Filipino LGBTQ+ activists have surged forward with a renewed campaign to pass the long-awaited SOGIE Equality Bill, determined to make equality a lived reality, not just a slogan on a parade banner. Manila City Hall’s flagpole isn’t the only thing standing tall, queer resilience and optimism are flying even higher.
From local wins to national ambition
While national-level legislation has repeatedly sputtered in Congress, determined activists have been steadily piling up victories at the grassroots level, pushing for anti-discrimination ordinances in places like Cebu and Manila. These local laws protect everything from job opportunities to access to government services, but activists insist that only a sweeping national law can end the patchwork of protections, and the injustices that slip through the cracks.
