Breaking Barriers: Senior Citizen and LGBT Members Honored at Olango Island Health Drive
In a heartwarming display of inclusivity and community support, Lapu-Lapu City’s “Operation Tulî” reached Olango Island yesterday, bringing not only essential health services but also moments of dignity and recognition for often marginalized community members.
The free circumcision program, which has been making its way through various barangays since mid-May, created a special atmosphere on the island as it welcomed participants from all walks of life, including senior citizens and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Courage Rewarded, Dignity Restored
Following the pattern established in previous program stops, the Olango Island event honored participants from often-overlooked demographics. Similar to the mainland events where a 67-year-old senior citizen received P20,000 and a 34-year-old LGBT community member was awarded P10,000 for their participation, the Olango extension of the program continued this practice of recognition.
“What makes this health initiative unique is how it addresses both physical health needs and the emotional well-being of participants,” shared one of the healthcare workers present at the event. “By creating special lanes and offering recognition for senior citizens and LGBTQ+ community members, we’re helping break down the stigma that has prevented many from seeking this health service.”
More Than Just Healthcare
The Operation Tulî program transcends typical healthcare initiatives by acknowledging the cultural significance of circumcision in Filipino society. For many uncircumcised adults, the social pressure can lead to feelings of exclusion and shame. By creating an inclusive environment that welcomes participants regardless of age or gender identity, the program addresses both physical and mental health concerns.
Children who participated also received medicines, snacks, ice cream, and family food boxes, making the experience more comfortable and rewarding for families who brought their children to the event.
A Heart-to-Heart Moment
What struck me most about this community initiative was the gentle way it addressed a sensitive topic while creating space for those often pushed to society’s margins. In our Filipino culture, where circumcision holds significant social importance, creating pathways for senior citizens and LGBTQ+ individuals to participate with dignity represents a meaningful step toward more inclusive healthcare.
The Olango Island event marks the final stop of the program, which previously visited several mainland barangays on May 20, 22, and 30. By extending the service to the island community, Lapu-Lapu City has ensured that geographical barriers don’t prevent residents from accessing this culturally significant health service.
