Digital Activism: Pinoy LGBTQ+ Wikipedians Boost Queer History Projects
Buckle up, fam, because our digital warriors are shining bright! Filipino LGBTQ+ Wikipedians and their allies are not just editing history, they’re making it. From Quezon City to Cebu, Pinoys are hitting the (virtual) books by elevating queer voices and stories through the world’s largest open encyclopedia. As the digital age rolls on, these homegrown heroes are turning clicks into pride and collaboration, proving that queerness thrives just as vibrantly online as it does in our streets and clubs.
Pride in every keystroke
This year’s push builds on the powerhouse energy of the WikiGap Campaign Philippines 2025, which actively spotlights queer and women’s stories in seven Philippine languages. The PhilWiki Community is mobilizing editors, including plenty of LGBTQ+ folk, to translate, improve, and create fresh articles about Filipino queer icons and milestones. In past campaigns, queer Pinoy editors not only joined in, they became international top contributors!
Wiki loves pride, photo by photo
Empowerment isn’t just in the words, it’s in the images. Last year, dozens of Central Bikol and Tagalog editors joined the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos Campaign in the Philippines. From rainbow flags in small town plazas to trans community leaders in action, these snapshots are making LGBTQ+ Filipino life visible for the world to see. The project trained enthusiastic new editors, united folks from all walks of life, and added thousands of images. Talk about #RepresentationMatters!
Queer history, leveled up
Thanks to grassroots activism, entries like LGBTQ rights in the Philippines are frequently updated to reflect the fast-evolving legal and cultural area. Recent updates cover everything from pride marches in Manila to the ongoing struggle for the SOGIE Equality Bill. And it’s not just encyclopedic entries, Wikiprojects focused on LGBTQ+ studies are getting major upgrades, with recent assessments and rating boosts reflecting improved article depth and accuracy.
