Pride and Healing Wisdom from PH Changemakers

Heart to Heart: Lessons from PH Changemakers on Pride and Healing

Kumusta, mahal kong ka-commUNITY! After sharing gentle ways to cope with monsoon anxiety in last week’s article, I heard from many of you about the need for hope, strength, and belonging, especially as the rains bring both literal and emotional storms. As July crescendos into Pride’s final notes, let’s gather around and listen to the heartfelt wisdom of Filipino changemakers who are making waves for LGBT+ pride and communal healing. Their stories remind us: you are not alone, and collective healing is possible, rain or shine.

Wellbeing at the heart of social change

This year, wellbeing and social change found deep roots at events like the Hearth Summit Philippines, where 150 Filipino changemakers gathered to nurture individual and collective wellness. These advocates, artists, and community leaders echoed one powerful message: caring for ourselves is not a luxury, it’s an act of courage and resistance. Creating safe indoor and outdoor spaces for rest, reflection, and connection was central, honoring the Filipino value of kapwa: the belief that our healing is bound together. Traditional arts, music, and rituals became tools for intergenerational healing, reminding us that our roots, culture, and joy are sources of strength, not shame.

Healing together, celebrating our stories

Many changemakers spoke about embracing vulnerability as key to true pride. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend during rainy nights or participating in workshops designed for healing, every small act of sharing can ripple into real change. Workshops at the Hearth Summit highlighted the need for collective rituals, like creating art together or starting the day with community meditation, to process grief and celebrate queer joy as a family. These practices offer lifelines, especially for those navigating unsupportive environments or struggling with self-acceptance.

Changemakers inspire action, not just awareness

Several leaders at the summit shared that lasting pride goes beyond rainbow flags, it’s about embedding wellness into our daily lives and communities. By normalizing rest, joy, and vulnerability, we build endurance for advocacy and hope. Allies and advocates are urged to champion policies and create programs that not only fight stigma but also institutionalize self-care and mental health support for all, including queer and trans Filipinos. It’s in these everyday actions, big and small, that change quietly flourishes.

“Pride is not just a celebration, it’s an invitation to heal and belong. Take pride in your rest and your resilience; both are acts of love for yourself and the community.”, message from Hearth Summit speaker

Heart to Heart: Reflection questions for your journey

  • How do I honor my own need for rest and healing?
  • Who are my safe people, my chosen family, who support my journey?
  • What little everyday practice reminds me that being queer in the Philippines is a gift, not a burden?
