As Pride festivities begin nationwide, LGBTQ+ Filipinos and allies are turning up the volume on calls for lawmakers to finally pass complete anti-discrimination protections. Despite years of advocacy, the Philippines still struggles to pass the anti-discrimination SOGIESC Equality Bill at the national level, leaving our community vulnerable in many parts of the country.

Local Victories, National Challenges

While we wait for Congress to act, the real tea is that change is happening from the ground up! Over a dozen cities and provinces have already enacted their own anti-discrimination ordinances. Manila, Cebu, and other forward-thinking municipalities now prohibit discrimination in employment, education, and access to government services based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

These local ordinances are serving fierce protection realness, prohibiting workplace harassment and ensuring that our community members can’t be denied jobs or school applications simply for being their authentic selves.

The Push for National Protection

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Philippines has added its voice to the chorus, with Country Representative Dr. Leila Joudane emphasizing that the passage of the SOGIE Bill in Congress would be “a crucial step towards a more inclusive and just Philippines, where everyone can live free from discrimination and violence.” The organization has urged Congress to pass this landmark legislation to protect the rights and dignity of all Filipinos.

Executive Action Shows Promise

While legislative progress has been slow, there’s some good news on the executive front! President Marcos Jr. has strengthened the national Diversity and Inclusion Program (DIP) through Executive Order No. 51, which established a Special Committee on LGBTQIA+ Affairs. This move aims to enhance existing mechanisms to combat discrimination and create a platform for our community’s meaningful participation in government policy formulation.
