Asian LGBTQ+ Advocates Launch Campaigns for Safer Online Spaces
Honey, the digital battleground just got fiercer, and our fabulous API (Asian and Pacific Islander) siblings are leading the charge! As we kick off Pride Month 2025, a powerful coalition of Asian LGBTQ+ advocates are turning up the volume on demands for safer online spaces, and darlings, it couldn’t come at a more critical moment.
Just yesterday, on June 5th, Seramount hosted their “Member Webinar: Pride Month 2025” where digital safety took center stage. The timing is particularly poignant as we’re still reeling from GLAAD’s shocking Social Media Safety Index released last month, which revealed how major platforms like YouTube and Meta have actively rolled back protections for our community.

API Voices Rising
The API LGBTQ+ Group, which hosts regular safe spaces for individuals of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, convened an emergency session on June 4th to strategize responses to these alarming policy changes. Their “API LGBTQ+ GROUP” meeting at the LGBTQ Center OC became ground zero for planning a coordinated digital advocacy campaign.
What makes this movement so powerful is how it builds on the foundation laid by organizations like Asian Pride Project, which has long provided an online space for LGBTQ+ Asian and Pacific Islanders to share their experiences through videos, images, and written stories. The Asian Pride Project is now pivoting its platform to specifically counter the harmful policy changes at Meta that now permit anti-LGBTQ slurs and harassment.
From Visibility to Action
The digital safety push comes at a critical intersection between Pride Month celebrations and the ongoing struggle for AAPI representation. The Asian Queer Joy Coalition, a partnership championed by Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California, has made digital safety a cornerstone of their 2025 legislative priorities.
“We cannot separate our queerness from our Asian identity,” explained one advocate during yesterday’s session. “These online platforms are where our communities find each other, where we tell our stories. When these spaces become unsafe, we lose vital connections.”

The campaign launches with a series of coordinated actions throughout Pride Month, culminating in a global online presence during WorkPride 2025, the global digital Pride conference for LGBTQ professionals and allies.
