Komiket Pride 2025: Filipino Queer Artists Take Center Stage

Bright banners, laughter echoing under the mall’s skylights, and rows of colorful zines, Komiket Pride 2025 was a celebration bursting with heart. This year, the active queer community of Filipino artists finally took center stage, transforming Ayala Malls the 30th and Market! Market! into safe havens of art, self-expression, and solidarity for all. Against a backdrop of historic erasure and marginalization, queer creativity radiated defiantly and joyfully, capturing what it really means to be seen and heard. As one komikero confided to me, “Dito, I feel at home, I can share my heart without fear.”

A home for queer storytelling

Komiket Pride’s two-weekend run in June welcomed more than 80 queer artists, indie creators, and entrepreneurs. Their booths brimmed with artworks that relished color, queerness, and resistance. For trans and nonbinary creators especially, it was a rare opportunity to trade stories openly with supportive readers and allies, no filter or apology required. At every turn, comic panels, prints, and stickers revealed lives rich in nuance, joys of chosen families, struggles for acceptance, and proud resistance to conformity. Many of these komiks went beyond entertainment, sparking thoughtful conversations about love, mental health, and identity in daily Filipino life.

Community in every corner

What set this year’s event apart was its inclusive energy, artists and attendees came from all over the spectrum and every walk of life. “It felt like Pride, but local, friendly, and super supportive,” shared one young artist. Alongside the comics market, initiatives like the Qwarta Merkado Bazaar and art workshops uplifted the voices of LGBTIQ+ entrepreneurs and provided safe, affirming spaces for connection. This focus on uplifting queer-owned businesses and creative talent shone bright, reflecting the fair’s evolution as a vital advocacy platform since 2023.
