Filipino pride gets a fabulous remix
Tara, mga bes! From the opening beats to the final curtain call, audience members (from balikbayans to bagong generation queers) reveled in back-to-back performances that mashed up indigenous heritage with unapologetically modern queerness. The same kundiman melodies and singkil footwork we’ve come to love took on new life as queer artists, many decked out in gowns, barongs, and rainbow-regalia, redefined tradition through their own stories.
This isn’t happenstance. The festival’s celebrated mission to showcase “living traditions” was elevated this year by LGBT+ Filipino creatives: fierce drag performers, spoken word artists embracing both Tagalog and English, and painters whose pieces blended batik patterns with glitter (literally, mga sis, there was a sparkle explosion!).
