Tristan, nonbinary and proud, graduated magna cum laude in International Studies from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in October 2024. Life might be short, but, as this couple shows, love can move fast, in the best way. Tristan and Lance first matched on a dating app in April 2023, both hailing from Binangonan, Rizal. Insta-connection? Check. Instant comfort talking about vulnerable topics, especially for Tristan, who seldom had to explain being nonbinary or queer to someone who just… got it? Double check. “That was the first time I ever felt comfortable talking to someone na I didn’t have to explain myself and my identity,” Tristan shared in an exclusive interview featured on PhilSTAR L!fe.
Lance, for his part, knew Tristan was different from the start. Where he was the quiet editor-in-chief running Ateneo’s Matanglawin and writing for major news outlets, Tristan was the passionate student council leader and SOGIE advocate, juggling orgs and NGOs. They were opposites in many ways, but that’s where the magic happened: “It’s just natural, you don’t have to force it,” Lance said.
Juggling Love, Grades, and Leadership
Their relationship didn’t put their academic dreams on hold, if anything, it fueled them. “We weren’t just stuck between acads and our love lives,” Lance admitted. Their solution? Quality time, even if it meant trekking from Katipunan to Santa Mesa just to study side by side, go for walks, or simply be present for each other. For nearly two years, they’ve made it work, through finals, presentations, and even now, as Tristan starts a government job and Lance steps into post-grad life.
The key? Mutual respect, space to grow, and a shared love language: quality time. “Important din for us to grow together individually,” Tristan said. Their ability to balance love, studies, and advocacy is a masterclass for any young queer couple navigating the pressure to prove themselves, to their families, peers, and even to each other.
Why Their Story Matters
Not every queer Pinoy gets a storybook ending, or even supportive parents, but Tristan and Lance count themselves lucky. “We were both raised in households full of love,” Lance said. “But I know that’s not really something na reality sa karamihan sa mga queer persons… parang may lagi silang patunayan.”
That’s why visibility is everything. When Tristan posted their graduation photo together, summa and magna cum laude, togas on, love in the air, the response was electric. It’s a reminder that queer love can thrive, that academic excellence isn’t reserved for straight couples, and that the next generation of Filipinos needs to see their faces, their stories, and their possibilities.
Tristan put it best: “Since we’re in a country na hindi pa ganon ka-progressive pagdating sa LGBT rights, napakalaking halaga ng visibility to our community… I want that visibility to translate to younger queer kids kasi alam na namin kung paano lumaki ng walang role model, walang someone to look up to.”
