Quezon City Pride Rallies for Safety and Mental Health

Quezon City’s Pride PH Coalition Calls for Safer Spaces and Mental Health Support

Last night, the Pride PH Coalition reaffirmed its call for safer spaces and strengthened mental health support for the LGBTQIA+ community in Quezon City, spotlighting these priorities as the heart of their ongoing partnership with the city government. The coalition’s message comes amid a year of landmark commitments, with the fourth annual “Lovelaban sa Diliman” Pride Festival underscoring an unwavering dedication to inclusivity, well-being, and concrete action for queer Filipinos. This year’s expanded festivities, anchored at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, are more than a celebration; they are a lifeline for many in our community who yearn for acceptance, safety, and mental resilience.

Spaces that heal, not harm

At the core of this year’s Pride Month events are lively Pride Villages set up across Quezon City, designed to offer safer environments and diverse programming for all identities. “We learned a lot from last year, and we continue to learn every year,” said Pride PH National Convener Vince Liban, emphasizing lessons on safety, respect, and inclusivity. Organizers are coordinating closely with UP’s internal security teams and the city government to deploy security personnel, traffic enforcers, and emergency response units, ensuring that everyone, regardless of SOGIESC, can take part in the festivities feeling seen and protected.

Centering mental health and well-being

The coalition’s advocacy extends beyond physical safety. This year’s festival places a special focus on mental health support, recognizing the unique challenges faced by queer Filipinos, from family rejection to social isolation and discrimination. In partnership with the city and supportive UP allies, the festival creates space for healing, connection, and shared strength. Programs and support services woven into the Pride Villages are meant to help attendees access resources, find community, and reclaim joy, critical lifelines in a country where stigma can often silence cries for help.

Policy, progress, and pride

Quezon City’s leadership has made it clear that words must be matched by action. Mayor Joy Belmonte’s renewed pledge to “advance inclusive initiatives and promote equal opportunities” builds on progressive city initiatives, like the Right to Care card, inclusive healthcare ordinances, and graduation rites honoring LGBTQIA+ achievers. The coalition has also called for national lawmakers to finally pass the SOGIE Equality Bill, a reminder that the journey to full equality is far from over, but hope grows stronger each year with every act of resistance and solidarity.
