Empowering Tondo’s Youth: A New Path Away from Sex Work

In the active, closely-knit streets of Tondo and its surrounding urban poor areas, many young individuals grow up believing that transactional sex is their only means of survival. However, through complete sexuality education (CSE) focused on SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression) awareness, these youths are discovering that there are other, more empowering paths available.

Supported by the UNFPA, the community organization Samahan ng Mamamayan, Zone One Tondo Organization (SM-ZOTO) has been implementing thorough sexuality education programs for out-of-school youth across Metro Manila’s urban poor regions. This includes reaching out to those engaging in high-risk transactional sex practices.
