In the Philippines, what we often cheer as tolerance for the LGBTQ+ community is, unfortunately, just a thin cover hiding the deep-rooted issues of systemic violence enshrined in our laws, culture, and institutions. Our kababayan face threats that extend far beyond mere acceptance. It’s a call to action, to tear down these harmful systems. From a surge in gender-based violence (GBV) cases to the tragic, targeted killings of trans activists, the reality is sobering.
Staggering Increase in Violence Reports
The recent statistics are startling. In 2019, the Philippine National Police reported 21,366 cases of GBV, a jump of 12.77% from the year before. Sexual exploitation and abuse, mainly involving rape and acts of lasciviousness, accounted for 22.53% of these cases.World Bank GBV Report Even more troubling, between August and November 2025, the DSWD’s Protective Services Bureau managed nearly 7,000 cases of violence against women and children (VAWC). They describe it as a “systemic issue,” woven into our cultural fabric, where corporal punishment often normalizes violence from a young age.GMA News While better reporting is a positive sign, these numbers highlight the severe impact on women, children, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Trans Lives and Leaders Under Attack
Trans Filipinos carry a particularly heavy burden. According to the Trans Murder Monitoring 2025, there were 281 reported murders of trans and gender-diverse people globally between October 2024 and September 2025, and activists make up 14% of those victims. This reflects a concerning trend of trying to silence voices through violence. Back home, older LGBTI people often face lifelong discrimination: 18% don’t feel safe daily, and in the last six months, 13% experienced emotional abuse while 10% faced physical violence from those close to them.SAGE Factsheet Online hostility is rampant too; 37 out of 60 LBQ respondents reported facing gender-based violence, including sexism and red-tagging, leading many to self-censor and experience mental health struggles.OutRight International Report
Legal and Social System Failures
