Thrive Through Pride Doc Rafs Mental Health Tips

Doc Raf’s Self-Care Checklist: Staying Mentally Healthy Through Pride Month

Pride Month is a time of celebration, community, and visibility for our LGBTQ+ family, but it can also bring emotional challenges that require intentional care. As we march, dance, and advocate throughout June, it’s crucial we maintain our mental well-being amid the festivities and sometimes, the intensity of being visible.

Pride can be a marathon, not a sprint. That’s why I’m sharing this complete self-care checklist to help you thrive, not just survive, during Pride Month.

Understanding Self-Care as Essential, Not Selfish

First, let’s address a persistent myth: self-care is not selfish. As highlighted by mental health experts, “self-care and selfish are not synonyms.” Self-care is about replenishment, while selfishness is excessive. Some people may label your boundaries as “selfish” because they’ve benefited from you prioritizing their needs over your own. Remember that your mental health is unique like a fingerprint, as is your approach to self-care.

Doc’s Orders: Your Pride Month Self-Care Checklist

1. Schedule Strategic Media Breaks

While staying informed is important, constant exposure to news and social media can be overwhelming. Taking planned media breaks allows your mind to reset and prevents emotional burnout from negative comments or news that may emerge during Pride events.

2. Practice Daily Mindfulness

Even five minutes of mindfulness can ground you amid Pride’s excitement and potential stressors. Mindfulness helps you stay present rather than getting caught in anxiety about past or future events. This practice supports emotional regulation, especially when navigating crowded spaces or potentially challenging interactions.

3. Establish Clear Boundaries

Pride Month often means numerous invitations and expectations. Be intentional about which events you attend and which relationships you prioritize. Social self-care might mean scheduling time with supportive friends, but also setting a time when you no longer take calls so you can be present for yourself.

4. Create Environmental Sanctuary

Your physical space affects your mental state. Environmental self-care involves organizing your home to be a supportive refuge, especially important during Pride when external environments may be stimulating or occasionally hostile. Consider creating a quiet corner with objects that bring comfort and affirmation.

5. Connect with Community Intentionally

While Pride celebrates community, meaningful connections are more valuable than simply being in crowds. Volunteer your time with organizations that align with your values, or arrange small gatherings with chosen family who uplift and support you.

Balance is Key

Finding balance during Pride Month means celebrating authentically while honoring your needs. When implementing these practices, give each new routine 2-3 weeks to become established before adding more. Remember that self-care isn’t about perfection, it’s about consistency and compassion toward yourself.

Pride is about embracing who we are, and that includes acknowledging our needs and limitations alongside our joy and resilience. So march proudly, but also rest purposefully. That’s not just good advice, those are Doc’s Orders!
