The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and countless advocates are calling loudly for justice, as yet another light in our community has been extinguished by hate and violence.

A fearless advocate silenced

Ali Macalintal, known for her compassionate activism, from radio airwaves to grassroots support, was gunned down on June 23, 2025, at her acupuncture clinic in GenSan. Reports say an unidentified assailant arrived on a motorcycle and, without warning, opened fire before fleeing. Ali was rushed to the hospital but declared dead on arrival. She leaves behind a legacy as a tireless human rights defender, an open-hearted broadcaster, and a beacon for LGBT+ rights.

Community response: Outrage and grief

Ali’s loss is deeply felt across Mindanao and far beyond. Both national and regional groups have fiercely condemned the killing, including the LGBTQIA+ alliance Bahaghari and human rights collective Karapatan. For many, the attack spotlights the grave dangers still faced by those working for equality, especially trans women and media professionals.

Justice and accountability: A community demand

The CHR has echoed urgent calls for swift, thorough, and impartial investigations and demanded that law enforcement respect the gender identity of victims in all communications.
