Trans Visibility Rising: How Transgender Police Officers Are Changing the Force

Transgender visibility is stepping out from the sidelines and right into the heart of law enforcement! As glitter meets grit, more transgender police officers are donning the uniform, breaking barriers, and bringing a much-needed wave of empathy and progress to policing across the country. Change is marching forward, and it’s got rainbow-embellished boots!

Breaking barriers: Trans officers on the frontlines

Historically, the police force has been anything but colorful. Law enforcement remains overwhelmingly male-dominated, with only 13.8 percent of full-time officers identifying as female in 2023, a stat that makes the appearance of transgender officers even more remarkable and significant for representation on the force. For many within the LGBT+ community, especially trans folk, interactions with police have been fraught: 44.9 percent of trans respondents in a recent survey reported experiencing insulting language from police, and nearly one in three trans people reported being arrested. No wonder trust between trans folks and law enforcement has been fragile, to say the least!

Shifting the culture: Leading with empathy and authenticity

Now, here come our trailblazing trans officers, bringing their lived experience and authenticity right onto the job. By serving openly, these officers aren’t just protecting communities, they’re also changing hearts and minds inside police precincts. Their presence directly challenges stereotypes, encourages co-workers to brush up on their LGBTQ+ sensitivity, and shows the next generation of queer youth that there’s a place for them in any career, even those with badges and blue uniforms.

As Officer Kai Santos, a proud trans cop in Metro Manila, shared at a recent Pride Roundtable:

“Every call I respond to, I know I’m changing someone’s idea of what a police officer can look like. And for young trans people? I hope I’m proof you can protect and serve without hiding who you are.”

Trans officers often lead the charge for more inclusive policies, from advocating for correct name and pronoun use to championing anti-discrimination protocols. This isn’t just good for their trans and queer colleagues, it makes policing safer and kinder for everyone.

Building trust: Why visibility matters

Visibility is power! When community members see trans officers, the badge starts to mean something different: it signals safety, acceptance, and, yes, pride. While trans and nonbinary people are still less likely than others to call the police for help (only 61.3 percent of trans respondents said they would, compared to 86.9 percent of non-LGBTQ+ people), seeing themselves reflected in the force can spark healing and open the door to rebuilding trust.
