Workplace Inclusion: How the LGBTQI Community Agenda Addresses Employment Discrimination
*By Ana “Heart” Villanueva, Published May 3, 2025*
For far too many LGBTQI Filipinos, the promise of equal opportunity in the workplace remains heartbreakingly out of reach. Recent research paints a stark picture: LGBTQI+ Filipinos are twice as likely to be underemployed, and three times more likely to face workplace discrimination or violence, compared to their non-LGBTQI peers. These numbers represent more than just statistics; they echo daily experiences of rejection, exclusion, and suppressed potential for so many in our community.
Naming the Barriers
Underemployment, for our LGBTQI siblings, often isn’t about a lack of talent or drive. Instead, it’s shaped by discrimination in hiring, unconscious bias in promotions, and hostile or unwelcoming workplaces that force individuals to hide their true selves or even leave jobs altogether. Imagine having to choose between your livelihood and your authenticity, a decision no one should have to make.
Building Inclusive Workplaces: Local Actions With National Impact
Progress is happening, thanks to tireless advocacy and community leadership. Organizations like the Philippine Financial & Inter-Industry Pride (PFIP) have stepped up, launching resources such as the PFIP Playbook, a best-practices guide for building truly inclusive and safe workplaces for all. The Playbook goes beyond policy suggestions, offering stories of transformation from real Philippine companies that dared to challenge old norms and center the diverse voices in our workforce.
Key strategies include:
– Implementing clear non-discrimination policies covering SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics)
– Training leaders and HR teams to recognize and interrupt bias
– Creating Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and safe spaces for support and mentorship
– Promoting visible LGBTQI leadership and representation at every business level
Events like the Philippine LGBTQ+ Gender Spectrum Forum and the PFIP Pride Summit provide platforms for learning, networking, and advocacy, reminding us that inclusion isn’t just a corporate trend, but a powerful catalyst for personal and societal transformation.
Heart to Heart: Moving From Awareness to Action
Dear reader, when LGBTQI people see themselves respected and empowered at work, it changes everything, ambition flourishes, mental health improves, and whole families thrive. The push for workplace inclusion is more than a policy agenda; it’s a movement for dignity, equality, and hope.
Let’s challenge ourselves to turn awareness into action: whether you’re a manager, colleague, or ally, your voice matters in creating workplaces where everyone belongs. Because building a just and inclusive workplace isn’t just good business, it’s the heart of a compassionate, forward-thinking society.
